Motocross in Switzerland when the Gulf summer gets too hot
When summer in the Emirates turns riding into hard work, Switzerland offers a change of scene. The flight takes around six hours, and while Switzerland is on summer time, Dubai is just two hours ahead; in the Swiss winter the gap grows to three hours, because Dubai does not change its clocks. The MX-Academy's training ground in Schlatt TG lies around 42 minutes by car from Zurich, and its course days are Wednesday and Saturday.
For riders who race or train in the UAE, a summer trip to Swiss tracks is also useful preparation for the next season at home. You ride on earth instead of sand, among green fields and woods, and between riding days you can explore lakes and historic towns that lie only a short drive away.

The guided summer programme from May to September
From May to September the MX-Academy runs a guided offer for guests from the Emirates with Mohammed Al Balooshi, who leads the MX-Academy Dubai together with Chris Möckli. Mohammed rides with the group in Switzerland and gives advice on handling hard-packed, grippy ground, which feels very different from the sand at home. Ask for dates and details at info@mx-academy.ch.
You can also come on your own schedule. Any normal Wednesday or Saturday course day is open to individual riders, whether you are a complete beginner or already race at home. The mx-academy.ch calendar of events lists every date and lets you book directly, and a short email is enough if you have questions beforehand.

A course day in Schlatt TG, step by step
The day begins at the shop of the MX-Academy, Hauptstrasse 8 in Schlatt TG. You register, collect your rental gear, sit in on a thorough theory briefing and then head out on the bike, stopping regularly for a rest and for advice on what to improve. Plan six to eight hours for the whole day. Wednesdays bring 3.5 hours of track time and Saturdays 4 hours, breaks and instruction included.
The training ground is listed in NASAK, the national sports facilities concept of the Swiss Confederation and Swiss Olympics. Of its four tracks, one is set aside for children and beginners, so newcomers can learn away from faster riders. For first-time riders, coaching is compulsory.

What to bring and what you can rent
You can arrive with very little luggage. Children ride Honda CRF bikes from the CRF50 to the CRF150; teenagers and adults get a CRF250. Protective gear ranges from kids' sizes to XXL: helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, knee guards and chest protector. All you pack yourself is a pair of long trousers and sturdy shoes.
No driving licence is needed, as the riding takes place on private grounds. That makes it easy for teenagers and adults who have never held a motorcycle licence. The youngest riders are 4 years old, the oldest 74. For children mainly aged 4 to 6 there is also a 1-hour taster session, held only every second Wednesday.
What a day of motocross in Switzerland costs
With rental bike and gear, a Wednesday course day is €392 (CHF 360) and a Saturday €446 (CHF 410). The 1-hour taster for young children is €180 (CHF 165). If you can already ride and bring your own bike, Wednesday costs €163 (CHF 150) and Saturday €196 (CHF 180); extra coaching is €54 (CHF 50).
Groups and company events receive a price on request. Prices are non-binding and may change. A motocross day also makes a present: gift vouchers are sold online only, arrive at once as a PDF and stay valid for two years.
From Zurich Airport to the track, with sights on the way
Fly into Zurich Airport and you are around 39 minutes by car from the MX-Academy Shop, measured without traffic; from the city of Zurich it is around 42 minutes. Without a car, bus 847 brings you to the stop 'Schlatt TG, Mettschlatt', about 70 metres from the door.
It takes around 16 minutes to reach the Rhine Falls, around 11 minutes to Schaffhausen with its Munot fortress and around 17 minutes to the old town of Stein am Rhein. Lucerne is around 1 hour 20 minutes away and Bern around 2 hours, so a riding day and a sightseeing day combine easily. More ideas for your stay are collected under things to do in Switzerland.
